Fintra Beach – A Wild Atlantic Treasure Just Outside Killybegs

If heaven had a soft spot for sand and sea, it might look suspiciously like Fintra Beach. Just 3km from the busy fishing port of Killybegs, this wide, Blue Flag beach is one of those places that makes you sigh as soon as the car door swings open. The approach alone is an experience: a steep, narrow road that makes you wonder if you should have skipped that extra scone at breakfast. But then, just as you’re questioning your life choices, the view opens up — golden sands stretching into Donegal Bay, with Benbulben in Sligo waving at you from across the water.

Fintra (Fionntrá, if you want to impress the locals with your Irish) is the kind of beach that ticks every box. Backed by grassy dunes and rugged hills, it’s a big, breezy playground where families can sprawl out with buckets and spades, kids can invent entire worlds in the sand, and grown-ups can secretly try to outdo them with their own “accidental” sandcastle masterpieces. On a warm summer’s day (they do exist in Donegal, honestly), the shallow waters are perfect for a paddle or a dip, and if you’re feeling adventurous, the far end of the beach hides a lagoon with a kind of otherworldly calm.

Of course, Ireland being Ireland, the weather may decide otherwise — but even when the Atlantic is flexing its moody muscles, Fintra is still magnificent. Lifeguards are on duty from June through September (12:00–18:30), and the coloured flags tell you everything you need to know: red and yellow means “hop in, you’re grand,” red means “maybe just admire from the shore,” and no flag means the lifeguards are off-duty and you’re on your own. Common sense applies: never swim alone, never assume you’re invincible, and do take note of where the lifebuoys are (nobody wants to be the star of a rescue drama).

Parking is a bit of a lottery. The small car park fills up quickly in summer, and the road down can be a bit of a squeeze — though there’s usually overflow parking and even a touch of summer camping nearby. Still, for those willing to make the trip, the reward is simple: clean sand under your feet, panoramic views, and the salty freedom of Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way.

Fintra Beach isn’t just a stop on the map; it’s a reminder of how wide and wonderful the world feels when you’re standing on the edge of the ocean with sand between your toes, wondering if you should risk a swim or just sit back and let Donegal do all the talking.
